Charlene Lodge

As SHE Manager, Charlene is responsible for ensuring we provide a safe working environment for everybody working on our sites. She has played a pivotal role in safeguarding our workforce through the pandemic and implementing our Management System which is now fully accredited with ISO9001, 14001 & 45001.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I enjoy having the responsibility for developing the standards we’ve set for health, safety and wellbeing, and working with everyone to ensure these are maintained.

I love the variety that each day brings. I get to build great working relationships with not only our employees but our clients and subcontractors, offering best practice, guidance and advice on working safely.

I take pride in the safety culture we’ve developed here and the steps we take to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing. As a department that interacts with a number of different areas within the business, I get the opportunity to support both internal and industry initiatives.

My role is definitely one of the most rewarding, everyday I see the benefits of the business prioritising Health & Safety. There’s so many opportunities for continued improvement as we always look to enhance our Safety, Health & Environmental Management System.

What has been your biggest achievement since joining Jarvis?

Initially after joining Jarvis, one of my main responsibilities was to establish the procedures, policies and our management system. This was a significant achievement for the growth of the business and to ensure continual improvement of our health and safety culture by having a structured management system to support it.

In 2019, our management system was audited, and we achieved our first ISO Accreditation for Occupational Health & Safety, ISO 45001, and have since been accredited for ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environment).

I feel 2020 was a very challenging year for the business, but I really enjoyed playing a massive part in helping with our response to COVID-19, ensuring that we kept everyone safe and well and had the right protocols in place to ensure we are COVID-19 secure in our workplace.

What’s an average day like in your role?

Exciting! As all of our projects are at different stages and come with their own potential challenges, I provide support and guidance to our workforce and promote a positive safety culture. Usually, I’ll be out on site undertaking a Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) Inspection, going through any necessary actions and ensuring that everybody is complying with safety legislation and maintaining our safety practices.

What skillset do you need to support your role?

With Health & Safety you need to be passionate, practical and aware of the potentially fatal risks of an unsafe working environment. You need to set the standards high as it reflects not only you, but the business and our expectations, it also ensures we’re providing a safe environment for our workforce.

Why did you decide to follow this career path?

I started off as a Project Manager and quickly found my passion was in identifying areas for improvement and potential hazards when out on site. After completing my IOSH Managing Safely course and SMSTS, I felt I would be more suited to a career in Health & Safety, I joined Jarvis in 2017 as a Health & Safety Advisor, and have since moved onto the role of SHE Manager.

What’s the best thing about working at Jarvis?

I thoroughly enjoy working for Jarvis and with my fellow colleagues, despite the size of the company it has a family feel and we all support one another. The Senior Management Team are always looking to invest in you and develop your career further.

It’s genuinely a great place to work and I feel proud when I’m out on-site representing Jarvis.
